CYMBALTA

(Duloxetine)

 

 

General Guidelines:

Cymbalta is one of the few drugs to treat neuropathic pain that is unlikely to lead to overweight

Adequate trial at a given dose might take 4-6 weeks

Pain relief usually occurs before antidepressants effects, i.e., less than one week

Minimize side effects:

  • Start at lower dose, e.g., 30 mg / day Cymbalta and then increase the dose slowly. Cymbalta has been used up to 120 mg / day to treat chronic pain.
 
  • Take with food
 
  • Take at bedtime
 
  • Nausea is the most common side effect and is likely to disappear in 7-10 days
 
  • Consider combining treatment with Cymbalta with another class of drug used to treat neuropathic pain (e.g. Lyrica)

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased sweating
  • Blurred vision
  • Yawning

 

Patient exclusion criteria:

 

  • Epileptic Seizure
  • Closed Angle Glaucoma
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Blood Pressure Drop Upon Standing
  • Hardening of the Liver caused by Alcohol
  • Chronic Inflammation of the Liver
  • Hardening of the Liver
  • Liver Problems
  • Serious Kidney Problems
  • Manic-Depression,
  • Having Thoughts of Suicide
  • Habit of Drinking Too Much Alcohol
